March
Top Tip:
I'm a great believer in enriching soil, but if you haven't
already done some preparation don't despair. You can still
apply decomposed matter from your compost. Where the soil is
already in good condition dig it in, if you have heavy clay
soil just use the compost to improve the top couple of inches
and don't try any deep digging.
Lawns:
Traditionally autumn and spring are the best times to 'weed
and feed' your lawn. When conditions permit you should also
have your mower back in action.
Perennials, annuals and bulbs:
Plant out your early annuals (like sweet peas) that have been
purchased or germinated under glass.
Prune rose bushes.
Fruit & Vegetables:
Whilst you can start to sow your summer vegetables don't overlook
the autumn/winter crops that need to be sown in March. Try
and stagger your sowings where you require frequent cropping.
For example sow radish or lettuce every two or three weeks.
If you enjoy baby carrots, you'll have a lot more if you try
three sowings three weeks apart.
If you have new fruit trees
now is about the best time to plant.
Greenhouse:
Your greenhouse should be full of seeds germinating or seedlings
ready to plant outside. If you have a heated greenhouse ensure
you don't kill your plants by placing them out in the cold
without acclimatising them to the exterior temperature. Use
cold frames. cloches or even leave seed trays out of the greenhouse
during the day before planting outside.
